Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my Devon Rex kitten have any fur?

This is quite normal for a Devon Kitten.  It can sometimes take many months for their coats to grow.  Most Devon Kittens are born with a lovely curly coat, but then lose it at about eight weeks of age.  As long as they had a good coat when they were born, there is no reason why they should not go on to grow a good coat as adults.

Why does my Devon Rex kitten eat so much?

Food is a Devon Rex's favourite hobby! Most Devon Rex have voracious appetites. If allowed, they would probably eat constantly all day, and whilst this is not normally an issue for an entire Rex, sadly once neutered, many Rex gain far more weight than is healthy.  It is up to us, as responsible owners, to stay firm and not give in to cajoling, as a fat Devon Rex is truly not a sight to behold!  All our Kittens come with a Diet Sheet, which should be followed carefully, particularly as Devons can have a tendency for stomach upsets.

Under no circumstances should you alter a Devon's diet immediately - always make any change very slowly and over several days.

How do I keep my Devon Rex off the kitchen worktop?

Simple - you can't!  Devon Rex love to be up on worktops, tables, shelves, bookcases, shoulders etc., and the more you try to say "No!", the more they will climb and jump.  It is part of their unique temperament, and if you don't like cats on the worktop, or your shoulders, or if you are house-proud - don't have a Rex!

Why can't I let my new Devon Rex kitten outside?

Because it just isn't safe.  Devon Rex are so friendly, and look so unique, that we personally believe they would be stolen.  Devon Rex are quite happy to live inside, where they are safe and secure, away from busy roads, catnappers, and other disease carrying cats.  (FeLV and FIV are very common in free ranging cats).  You are not denying them anything, because what they have never had, they never miss.  We prefer to sell our kittens to Indoor homes, although we do recognise that in special circumstances, it may be possible to offer safe outside access, perhaps to a cat proof garden, or run.

Will I be able to show my Devon Rex kitten?

We are more than happy for our curly babies to be shown.  Should any of our kitten's new owners wish to show, we would be happy to help out.  Your first Show can be a little daunting, but you will soon get the hang of it, and hopefully find it a pleasurable experience!  If you don't like losing, don't go to Cat Shows, because you don't always win.  You do however always take the best cat home with you!

Aren't Devon Rex hypo-allergenic?

I'm afraid not. As it is probably the dander from the cat's skin, not just cat fur, that causes an allergic reaction, there is no guarantee that a Devon Rex will be better tolerated.  We do not sell our kittens on the basis that they will be non-allergenic.  We would recommend that you visit a Rex only household to gauge your reaction to Rexes, before thinking about buying one.
